New International Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
If you see your fellow Israelite's ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. | 1If you see your brother's ox or sheep straying, you must not ignore it; make sure you return it to your brother. |
If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. | 2If your brother does not live near you or you don't know him, you are to bring the animal to your home to remain with you until your brother comes looking for it; then you can return it to him. |
Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it. | 3Do the same for his donkey, his garment, or anything your brother has lost and you have found. You must not ignore it. |
If you see your fellow Israelite's donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet. | 4If you see your brother's donkey or ox fallen down on the road, you must not ignore it; you must help him lift it up." |
A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this. | 5A woman is not to wear male clothing, and a man is not to put on a woman's garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD your God." |
If you come across a bird's nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young. | 6If you come across a bird's nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, you must not take the mother along with the young. |
You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life. | 7You may take the young for yourself, but be sure to let the mother go free, so that you may prosper and live long. |
When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof. | 8If you build a new house, make a railing around your roof, so that you don't bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls from it. |
Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled. | 9Do not plant your vineyard with two types of seed; otherwise, the entire harvest, both the crop you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled. |
Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together. | 10Do not plow with an ox and a donkey together. |
Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together. | 11Do not wear clothes made of both wool and linen. |
Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear. | 12Make tassels on the four corners of the outer garment you wear." |
If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her | 13If a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and comes to hate her, |
and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, "I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity," | 14and accuses her of shameful conduct, and gives her a bad name, saying, 'I married this woman and was intimate with her, but I didn't find any evidence of her virginity,' |
then the young woman's father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. | 15the young woman's father and mother will take the evidence of her virginity and bring it to the city elders at the gate. |
Her father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. | 16The young woman's father will say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, but he hates her. |
Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, | 17He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying: "I didn't find any evidence of your daughter's virginity," but here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity.' They will spread out the cloth before the city elders. |
and the elders shall take the man and punish him. | 18Then the elders of that city will take the man and punish him. |
They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. | 19They will also fine him 100 silver shekels and give them to the young woman's father, because that man gave an Israelite virgin a bad name. She will remain his wife; he cannot divorce her as long as he lives. |
If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman's virginity can be found, | 20But if this accusation is true and no evidence of the young woman's virginity is found, |
she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you. | 21they will bring the woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an outrage in Israel by being promiscuous in her father's house. You must purge the evil from you." |
If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. | 22If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man's wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. |
If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, | 23If there is a young woman who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and has sex with her, |
you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death--the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you. | 24you must take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death--the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor's fiancee. You must purge the evil from you. |
But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. | 25But if the man encounters an engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die. |
Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, | 26Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him. |
for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her. | 27When he found her in the field, the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. |
If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, | 28If a man encounters a young woman, a virgin who is not engaged, takes hold of her and rapes her, and they are discovered, |
he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. | 29the man who raped her must give the young woman's father 50 silver shekels, and she must become his wife because he violated her. He cannot divorce her as long as he lives." |
A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not dishonor his father's bed. | 30A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not violate his father's marriage bed." |
