Psalm 74
NET Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew American Standard Bible 1995
A well-written song by Asaph. Why, O God, have you permanently rejected us? Why does your anger burn against the sheep of your pasture? 1A Maskil of Asaph. O God, why have You rejected us forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember your people whom you acquired in ancient times, whom you rescued so they could be your very own nation, as well as Mount Zion, where you dwell! 2Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, Which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance; And this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt.
Hurry and look at the permanent ruins, and all the damage the enemy has done to the temple! 3Turn Your footsteps toward the perpetual ruins; The enemy has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
Your enemies roar in the middle of your sanctuary; they set up their battle flags. 4Your adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place; They have set up their own standards for signs.
They invade like lumberjacks swinging their axes in a thick forest. 5It seems as if one had lifted up His axe in a forest of trees.
And now they are tearing down all its engravings with axes and crowbars. 6And now all its carved work They smash with hatchet and hammers.
They set your sanctuary on fire; they desecrate your dwelling place by knocking it to the ground. 7They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They say to themselves, "We will oppress all of them." They burn down all the places where people worship God in the land. 8They said in their heart, "Let us completely subdue them." They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see any signs of God's presence; there are no longer any prophets and we have no one to tell us how long this will last. 9We do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet, Nor is there any among us who knows how long.
How long, O God, will the adversary hurl insults? Will the enemy blaspheme your name forever? 10How long, O God, will the adversary revile, And the enemy spurn Your name forever?
Why do you remain inactive? Intervene and destroy him! 11Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? From within Your bosom, destroy them!
But God has been my king from ancient times, performing acts of deliverance on the earth. 12Yet God is my king from of old, Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth.
You destroyed the sea by your strength; you shattered the heads of the sea monster in the water. 13You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you fed him to the people who live along the coast. 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
You broke open the spring and the stream; you dried up perpetually flowing rivers. 15You broke open springs and torrents; You dried up ever-flowing streams.
You established the cycle of day and night; you put the moon and sun in place. 16Yours is the day, Yours also is the night; You have prepared the light and the sun.
You set up all the boundaries of the earth; you created the cycle of summer and winter. 17You have established all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer and winter.
Remember how the enemy hurls insults, O LORD, and how a foolish nation blasphemes your name! 18Remember this, O LORD, that the enemy has reviled, And a foolish people has spurned Your name.
Do not hand the life of your dove over to a wild animal! Do not continue to disregard the lives of your oppressed people! 19Do not deliver the soul of Your turtledove to the wild beast; Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
Remember your covenant promises, for the dark regions of the earth are full of places where violence rules. 20Consider the covenant; For the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
Do not let the afflicted be turned back in shame! Let the oppressed and poor praise your name! 21Let not the oppressed return dishonored; Let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.
Rise up, O God! Defend your honor! Remember how fools insult you all day long! 22Arise, O God, and plead Your own cause; Remember how the foolish man reproaches You all day long.
Do not disregard what your enemies say, or the unceasing shouts of those who defy you. 23Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries, The uproar of those who rise against You which ascends continually.
