Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures! | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. |
Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy, | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary |
and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. |
They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live. | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. |
They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. |
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. |
He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live. | 7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. |
They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains, | 10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, |
because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king. | 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up. | 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. |
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars. | 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. |
They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins. | 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. |
They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death. | 18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. |
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped. | 20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done! | 22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. |
Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; |
They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water. | 24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. |
He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea. | 25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great. | 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. |
They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. |
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. |
He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent. | 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. |
The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired. | 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside! | 32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. |
He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land, | 33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; |
and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants. | 34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. |
As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water. | 35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; |
He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live. | 36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, |
They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit. | 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. |
He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number. | 38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. |
As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering. | 39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, |
He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road. | 40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. |
Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep. | 41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. |
When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth. | 42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. |
Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love! | 43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. |
