The LORD abhors dishonest scales, but an accurate weight is his delight. | 1A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight. |
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. | 2When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom. |
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the unfaithful destroys them. | 3The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them. |
Wealth does not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger. | 4Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death. |
The righteousness of the blameless will make straight their way, but the wicked person will fall by his own wickedness. | 5The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. |
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, but the faithless will be captured by their own desires. | 6The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed. |
When a wicked person dies, his expectation perishes, and the hope of his strength perishes. | 7When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of strong men perishes. |
The righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked turns up in his stead. | 8The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place. |
With his speech the godless person destroys his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous will be delivered. | 9With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered. |
When the righteous do well, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there is joy. | 10When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, And when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting. |
A city is exalted by the blessing provided from the upright, but it is destroyed by the counsel of the wicked. | 11By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, But by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down. |
The one who denounces his neighbor lacks wisdom, but the one who has discernment keeps silent. | 12He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, But a man of understanding keeps silent. |
The one who goes about slandering others reveals secrets, but the one who is trustworthy conceals a matter. | 13He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter. |
When there is no guidance a nation falls, but there is success in the abundance of counselors. | 14Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory. |
The one who puts up security for a stranger will surely have trouble, but whoever avoids shaking hands will be secure. | 15He who is guarantor for a stranger will surely suffer for it, But he who hates being a guarantor is secure. |
A generous woman gains honor, and ruthless men seize wealth. | 16A gracious woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches. |
A kind person benefits himself, but a cruel person brings himself trouble. | 17The merciful man does himself good, But the cruel man does himself harm. |
The wicked person earns deceitful wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a genuine reward. | 18The wicked earns deceptive wages, But he who sows righteousness gets a true reward. |
True righteousness leads to life, but the one who pursues evil pursues it to his own death. | 19He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death. |
The LORD abhors those who are perverse in heart, but those who are blameless in their ways are his delight. | 20The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their walk are His delight. |
Be assured that the evil person will certainly be punished, but the descendants of the righteous will not suffer unjust judgment. | 21Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be delivered. |
Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who rejects discretion. | 22As a ring of gold in a swine's snout So is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. |
What the righteous desire leads only to good, but what the wicked hope for leads to wrath. | 23The desire of the righteous is only good, But the expectation of the wicked is wrath. |
One person is generous and yet grows more wealthy, but another withholds more than he should and comes to poverty. | 24There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, And there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want. |
A generous person will be enriched, and the one who provides water for others will himself be satisfied. | 25The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered. |
People will curse the one who withholds grain, but they will praise the one who sells it. | 26He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it. |
The one who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but the one who searches for evil--it will come to him. | 27He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him. |
The one who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. | 28He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like the green leaf. |
The one who troubles his family will inherit nothing, and the fool will be a servant to the wise person. | 29He who troubles his own house will inherit wind, And the foolish will be servant to the wisehearted. |
The fruit of the righteous is like a tree producing life, and the one who wins souls is wise. | 30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls. |
If the righteous are recompensed on earth, how much more the wicked sinner! | 31If the righteous will be rewarded in the earth, How much more the wicked and the sinner! |
