The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way, 2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way.
the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'" 3He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'"
In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.5People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins.
John wore a garment made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.6Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey.
He proclaimed, "One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.7He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps.
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." 8I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.10Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven: "You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight."11Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!"
The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness.12At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.
He was in the wilderness forty days, enduring temptations from Satan. He was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs. 13He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him.
Now after John was imprisoned, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.14Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God.
He said, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!"15He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!"
As he went along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).16While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people."17Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!"
They left their nets immediately and followed him.18So immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their boat mending nets.19Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets.
Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. 20He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Then they went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.21Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
The people there were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like the experts in the law.22The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes.
Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,23All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed,
"Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!"25But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!"
After throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.26At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.
They were all amazed so that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him."27All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!"
So the news about him spread quickly throughout all the region around Galilee. 28At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.
Now as soon as they left the synagogue, they entered Simon and Andrew's house, with James and John.29After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John.
Simon's mother-in-law was lying down, sick with a fever, so they spoke to Jesus at once about her.30Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her.
He came and raised her up by gently taking her hand. Then the fever left her and she began to serve them.31He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them.
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and demon-possessed.32When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons.
The whole town gathered by the door.33In fact, the whole city gathered at the door.
So he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. But he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 34He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was.
Then Jesus got up early in the morning when it was still very dark, departed, and went out to a deserted place, and there he spent time in prayer.35In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there.
Simon and his companions searched for him.36Simon and his companions searched frantically for him.
When they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you."37When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you."
He replied, "Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I can preach there too. For that is what I came out here to do."38"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came."
So he went into all of Galilee preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. 39So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Now a leper came to him and fell to his knees, asking for help. "If you are willing, you can make me clean," he said.40Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean."
Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing. Be clean!"41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!"
The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean.42Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean.
Immediately Jesus sent the man away with a very strong warning.43Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once.
He told him, "See that you do not say anything to anyone, but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."44He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities."
But as the man went out he began to announce it publicly and spread the story widely, so that Jesus was no longer able to enter any town openly but stayed outside in remote places. Still they kept coming to him from everywhere. 45But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere.
