| 1(My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous One, | 1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. | 2and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world. | 2He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. |
| 3Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments. | 3And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. |

| 24As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain in you.
