For the choir director. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. | 1For the music director; By David, a psalm. I relied completely on the LORD, and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help. |
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. | 2He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. |
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD. | 3He gave me reason to sing a new song, praising our God. May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the LORD! |
How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. | 4How blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD and does not seek help from the proud or from liars! |
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They would be too numerous to count. | 5O LORD, my God, you have accomplished many things; you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. No one can thwart you! I want to declare them and talk about them, but they are too numerous to recount! |
Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. | 6Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. You make that quite clear to me! You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings. |
Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. | 7Then I say, "Look! I come! What is written in the scroll pertains to me. |
I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart." | 8I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your law dominates my thoughts." |
I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know. | 9I have told the great assembly about your justice. Look! I spare no words! O LORD, you know this is true. |
I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation. | 10I have not failed to tell about your justice; I spoke about your reliability and deliverance; I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. |
You, O LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me. | 11O LORD, you do not withhold your compassion from me. May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me! |
For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. | 12For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me. |
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; Make haste, O LORD, to help me. | 13Please be willing, O LORD, to rescue me! O LORD, hurry and help me! |
Let those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt. | 14May those who are trying to snatch away my life be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who want to harm me be turned back and ashamed! |
Let those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, "Aha, aha!" | 15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be humiliated and disgraced! |
Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, "The LORD be magnified!" | 16May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you! May those who love to experience your deliverance say continually, "May the LORD be praised!" |
Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God. | 17I am oppressed and needy! May the Lord pay attention to me! You are my helper and my deliverer! O my God, do not delay! |
