"Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil. | 1"Man, born of woman, lives but a few days, and they are full of trouble. |
"Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain. | 2He grows up like a flower and then withers away; he flees like a shadow, and does not remain. |
"You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself. | 3Do you fix your eye on such a one? And do you bring me before you for judgment? |
"Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one! | 4Who can make a clean thing come from an unclean? No one! |
"Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass. | 5Since man's days are determined, the number of his months is under your control; you have set his limit and he cannot pass it. |
"Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man. | 6Look away from him and let him desist, until he fulfills his time like a hired man. |
"For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail. | 7"But there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. |
"Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil, | 8Although its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump begins to die in the soil, |
At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant. | 9at the scent of water it will flourish and put forth shoots like a new plant. |
"But man dies and lies prostrate. Man expires, and where is he? | 10But man dies and is powerless; he expires--and where is he? |
"As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up, | 11As water disappears from the sea, or a river drains away and dries up, |
So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep. | 12so man lies down and does not rise; until the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor arise from their sleep. |
"Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me! | 13"O that you would hide me in Sheol, and conceal me till your anger has passed! O that you would set me a time and then remember me! |
"If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes. | 14If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait until my release comes. |
"You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands. | 15You will call and I--I will answer you; you will long for the creature you have made. |
"For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin. | 16"Surely now you count my steps; then you would not mark my sin. |
"My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You wrap up my iniquity. | 17My offenses would be sealed up in a bag; you would cover over my sin. |
"But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place; | 18But as a mountain falls away and crumbles, and as a rock will be removed from its place, |
Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man's hope. | 19as water wears away stones, and torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy man's hope. |
"You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away. | 20You overpower him once for all, and he departs; you change his appearance and send him away. |
"His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it. | 21If his sons are honored, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he does not see it. |
"But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself." | 22Only his flesh has pain for himself, and he mourns for himself." |
