Job 14
NASB Parallel CSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New American Standard Bible 1995Christian Standard Bible
"Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil.1Anyone born of woman is short of days and full of trouble.
"Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.2He blossoms like a flower, then withers; he flees like a shadow and does not last.
"You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself.3Do you really take notice of one like this? Will you bring me into judgment against you?
"Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!4Who can produce something pure from what is impure? No one!
"Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass.5Since a person's days are determined and the number of his months depends on you, and since you have set limits he cannot pass,
"Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man.6look away from him and let him rest so that he can enjoy his day like a hired worker.
"For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail.7There is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its shoots will not die.
"Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil,8If its roots grow old in the ground and its stump starts to die in the soil,
At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant.9the scent of water makes it thrive and produce twigs like a sapling.
"But man dies and lies prostrate. Man expires, and where is he?10But a person dies and fades away; he breathes his last--where is he?
"As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up,11As water disappears from a lake and a river becomes parched and dry,
So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep.12so people lie down never to rise again. They will not wake up until the heavens are no more; they will not stir from their sleep.
"Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me!13If only you would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until your anger passes. If only you would appoint a time for me and then remember me.
"If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes.14When a person dies, will he come back to life? If so, I would wait all the days of my struggle until my relief comes.
"You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands.15You would call, and I would answer you. You would long for the work of your hands.
"For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin.16For then you would count my steps but would not take note of my sin.
"My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You wrap up my iniquity.17My rebellion would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity.
"But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place;18But as a mountain collapses and crumbles and a rock is dislodged from its place,
Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man's hope.19as water wears away stones and torrents wash away the soil from the land, so you destroy a man's hope.
"You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away.20You completely overpower him, and he passes on; you change his appearance and send him away.
"His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.21If his sons receive honor, he does not know it; if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.
"But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself."22He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.
