A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight. | 1Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but an accurate weight is His delight. |
When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom. | 2When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom. |
The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them. | 3The integrity of the upright guides them, but the perversity of the faithless destroys them. |
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death. | 4Riches are worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness brings deliverance from death. |
The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. | 5The righteousness of the blameless directs their path, but the wicked fall by their own wickedness. |
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed. | 6The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the faithless are trapped by their own desires. |
When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of strong men perishes. | 7When the wicked man dies, his hope perishes, and the hope of his strength vanishes. |
The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place. | 8The righteous man is delivered from trouble; in his place the wicked man goes in. |
With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered. | 9With his mouth the ungodly man destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous are rescued. |
When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, And when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting. | 10When the righteous thrive, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. |
By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, But by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down. | 11By the blessing of the upright a city is built up, but by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down. |
He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, But a man of understanding keeps silent. | 12Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks judgment, but a man of understanding remains silent. |
He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter. | 13A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence. |
Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory. | 14For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors comes deliverance. |
He who is guarantor for a stranger will surely suffer for it, But he who hates being a guarantor is secure. | 15He who puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but the one who hates indebtedness is secure. |
A gracious woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches. | 16A gracious woman attains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth. |
The merciful man does himself good, But the cruel man does himself harm. | 17A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself. |
The wicked earns deceptive wages, But he who sows righteousness gets a true reward. | 18The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows righteousness reaps a true reward. |
He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death. | 19Genuine righteousness leads to life, but the pursuit of evil brings death. |
The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their walk are His delight. | 20The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, but the blameless in their walk are His delight. |
Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be delivered. | 21Be assured that the wicked will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will escape. |
As a ring of gold in a swine's snout So is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. | 22Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. |
The desire of the righteous is only good, But the expectation of the wicked is wrath. | 23The desire of the righteous leads only to good, but the hope of the wicked brings wrath. |
There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, And there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want. | 24One gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds what is right, only to become poor. |
The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered. | 25A generous soul will prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. |
He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it. | 26The people will curse the hoarder of grain, but blessing will crown the one who sells it. |
He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him. | 27He who searches out good finds favor, but evil will come to him who seeks it. |
He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like the green leaf. | 28He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like foliage. |
He who troubles his own house will inherit wind, And the foolish will be servant to the wisehearted. | 29He who brings trouble on his house will inherit the wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart. |
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls. | 30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. |
If the righteous will be rewarded in the earth, How much more the wicked and the sinner! | 31If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner! |
