New American Standard Bible 1995 | Berean Study Bible |
It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife. | 1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is intolerable even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. |
You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. | 2And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been stricken with grief and have removed from your fellowship the man who did this? |
For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. | 3Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present. |
In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, | 4When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of the Lord Jesus, |
I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. | 5hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord. |
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? | 6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven works through the whole batch of dough? |
Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. | 7Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. |
Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. | 8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old bread, leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and of truth. |
I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; | 9I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people. |
I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. | 10I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. |
But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler-- not even to eat with such a one. | 11But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. |
For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? | 12What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? |
But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES. | 13God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.” |
