King James Bible | New Living Translation |
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. | 1Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. |
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. | 2Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. |
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. | 3For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. |
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. | 4Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. |
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. | 5For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. |
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. | 6But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. |
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. | 7Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. | 8Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice. |
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. | 9Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. | 10Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. |
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. | 11Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. | 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. |
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. | 13Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. |
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. | 14Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. |
O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. | 15Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you. |
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. | 16You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. |
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. | 17The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. |
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. | 18Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. | 19Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. |
