King James Bible | New Living Translation |
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. | 1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. |
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. | 2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. |
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. | 3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. |
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. | 4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. |
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. | 5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. |
Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. | 6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings. |
Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, | 7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: |
I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. | 8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” |
I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. | 9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. |
I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. | 10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. |
Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. | 11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. |
For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. | 12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. |
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. | 13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. |
Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. | 14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. |
Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha. | 15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!” |
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified. | 16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!” |
But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. | 17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay. |
