Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: | 1Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: |
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, | 2Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; |
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: | 3seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. |
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | 4For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. |
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; | 5Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, |
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; | 6and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, |
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. | 7and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. |
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. | 9For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. |
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: | 10Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; |
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. | 11for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. |
Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. | 12Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. |
Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; | 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, |
Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. | 14knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. |
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. | 15And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. |
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. | 16For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. |
For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased "-- |
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. | 18and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. |
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: | 19So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. |
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. | 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, |
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. | 21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. |
