Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: | 1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: |
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, | 2Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. |
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: | 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. |
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | 4Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. |
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; | 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; |
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; | 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; |
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. | 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. |
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. | 9But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. |
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: | 10Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, |
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. | 11and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. |
Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. | 12Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have. |
Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; | 13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of my body, |
Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. | 14because I know that this tent will soon be laid aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. |
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. | 15And I will make every effort to ensure that after my departure, you will be able to recall these things at all times. |
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. | 16For we did not follow cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. |
For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | 17For He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” |
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. | 18And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. |
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: | 19We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. | 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation. |
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. | 21For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. |
