King James Bible | International Standard Version |
Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? | 1 "Can you draw Leviathan out of the water with a hook, or tie down his tongue with a rope? |
Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? | 2Can you attach a bridle to his snout, or pierce his jaw with a hook? |
Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? | 3Will he make many supplications to you, or will he beg you for mercy? |
Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? | 4Will he try to make a deal with you, so that you may take him in servitude forever? |
Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? | 5"Will you play with him like a pet bird? Will you put a leash on him for your little girls? |
Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? | 6Will your business be able to buy him, Will you divide him among your merchant friends? |
Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? | 7Will you fill his flesh with harpoons, or his head with lances? |
Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. | 8Lay your hand on him, and you'll remember the struggle. You'll never do that again! |
Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? | 9"Look! Anyone's hope to capture him will prove itself false; anyone would be terrified just by looking at him. |
None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? | 10No one is fierce enough to dare to arouse him. "Who, then, can stand in my presence and face me? |
Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. | 11Who can take me to court and be reconciled to me? All of heaven is mine. |
I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion. | 12"I won't be silent concerning his limbs, his mighty strength, and orderly frame. |
Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? | 13Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can approach him with a bridle? |
Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. | 14Who dares to open his mouth, since it is ringed with his terrible teeth! |
His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. | 15His protective scales are his pride, they lie sealed tightly together. |
One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. | 16Each one is so close to the other that not even air comes in between them. |
They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. | 17Each is attached to the other, grasping each other so they cannot be separated. |
By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. | 18"His snorting releases flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of the dawn. |
Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. | 19Flames blaze from his mouth; streams of sparking fire fly out. |
Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. | 20Smoke billows from his nostrils; like a boiling pot or burning reeds. |
His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. | 21His breath can ignite coal; and flames proceed from his mouth. |
In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. | 22"His neck is so powerful that all who meet him are terrified. |
The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. | 23There is no flaw in his body's armor; it is firmly fixed on him and unbreachable. |
His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. | 24His heart is as strong as stone, it is as hard as a lower millstone. |
When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. | 25When he rears up, the mighty are terrified; they are bewildered as he thrashes about. |
The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. | 26"Thrusting at him with a sword won't be effective, nor will spears, darts, or javelins. |
He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. | 27He regards iron like straw, and hardened bronze like a dead tree. |
The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. | 28Arrows won't make him flee; stones from a sling are only pebbles to him. |
Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. | 29Clubs are like twigs; he laughs at the whoosh of the javelin. |
Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. | 30"Beneath him he is armored as with sharp potsherds; he tears through muddy ground like a threshing sledge through grain. |
He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. | 31He causes the deep to boil like water in a pot, and churns the sea like one stirs ointment. |
He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. | 32The sea is luminescent behind him; his wake turns the sea white, like those with gray hair. |
Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. | 33"There's nothing like him on earth; he was created without the ability to fear. |
He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride. | 34He looks down on everything that is high; he rules over every kind of pride." |
