And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; | 1The two angels entered Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting at Sodom's gate. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them. He bowed with his face to the ground |
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. | 2and said, "My lords, turn aside to your servant's house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and go on your way."" No," they said. "We would rather spend the night in the square." |
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. | 3But he urged them so strongly that they followed him and went into his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate. |
But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: | 4Before they went to bed, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, the whole population, surrounded the house. |
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. | 5They called out to Lot and said, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have sex with them!" |
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, | 6Lot went out to them at the entrance and shut the door behind him. |
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. | 7He said, "Don't do this evil, my brothers. |
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. | 8Look, I've got two daughters who haven't had sexual relations with a man. I'll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want to them. However, don't do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof."" |
And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. | 9Get out of the way!" they said, adding, "This one came here as a foreigner, but he's acting like a judge! Now we'll do more harm to you than to them." They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door. |
But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. | 10But the angels reached out, brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. |
And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. | 11They struck the men who were at the entrance of the house, both young and old, with a blinding light so that they were unable to find the entrance. |
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: | 12Then the angels said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here: a son-in-law, your sons and daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of this place, |
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. | 13for we are about to destroy this place because the outcry against its people is so great before the LORD, that the LORD has sent us to destroy it." |
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. | 14So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to marry his daughters. "Get up," he said. "Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. |
And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. | 15At daybreak the angels urged Lot on: "Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city." |
And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. | 16But he hesitated. Because of the LORD's compassion for him, the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters. Then they brought him out and left him outside the city. |
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. | 17As soon as the angels got them outside, one of them said, "Run for your lives! Don't look back and don't stop anywhere on the plain! Run to the mountains, or you will be swept away!" |
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: | 18But Lot said to them, "No, my lords--please. |
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: | 19Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by saving my life. But I can't run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die. |
Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. | 20Look, this town is close enough for me to run to. It is a small place. Please let me go there--it's only a small place, isn't it?--so that I can survive." |
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. | 21And he said to him, "All right, I'll grant your request about this matter too and will not demolish the town you mentioned. |
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. | 22Hurry up! Run there, for I cannot do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city is Zoar. |
The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. | 23The sun had risen over the land when Lot reached Zoar. |
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; | 24Then out of the sky the LORD rained burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from the LORD. |
And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. | 25He demolished these cities, the entire plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground. |
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. | 26But his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. |
And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: | 27Early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the LORD. |
And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. | 28He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw that smoke was going up from the land like the smoke of a furnace. |
And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. | 29So it was, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the middle of the upheaval when He demolished the cities where Lot had lived. |
And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. | 30Lot departed from Zoar and lived in the mountains along with his two daughters, because he was afraid to live in Zoar. Instead, he and his two daughters lived in a cave. |
And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: | 31Then the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us as is the custom of all the land. |
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. | 32Come, let's get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father's line." |
And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. | 33So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up. |
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. | 34The next day the firstborn said to the younger, "Look, I slept with my father last night. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father's line." |
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. | 35That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up. |
Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. | 36So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. |
And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. | 37The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today. |
And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day. | 38The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today. |
