| 1Therefore, if you have been raised with the Messiah, keep focusing on the things that are above, where the Messiah is seated at the right hand of God. | 1Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. |
| 2Keep your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. | 2Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. |
| 3For you have died, and your life has been safely guarded by the Messiah in God. | 3For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. |
| 4When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you, too, will be revealed with him in glory. | 4And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. |
| 5So put to death your worldly impulses: sexual sin, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). | 5So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. |
| 6It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. | 6Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. |
| 7You used to behave like them as you lived among them. | 7You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. |
| 8But now you must also get rid of anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene speech, and all such sins. | 8But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. |
| 9Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old nature with its practices | 9Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. |
| 10and have clothed yourselves with the new nature, which is being renewed in full knowledge, consistent with the image of the one who created it. | 10Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. |
| 11In him there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free person. Instead, the Messiah is all and in all. | 11In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. |
| 12Therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. | 12Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. |
| 13Be tolerant of one another and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also should forgive. | 13Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. |
| 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which ties everything together in unity. | 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. |
| 15Let the peace of the Messiah also rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body, and be thankful. | 15And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. |
| 16Let the word of the Messiah inhabit you richly with wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and singing to God with thankfulness in your hearts. | 16Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. |
| 17And whatever you do, whether by speech or action, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. | 17And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. | 18Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is appropriate for those who belong to the Lord. | 18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord. |
| 19Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. | 19Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly. |
| 20Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. | 20Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord. |

| 23Whatever you do, work at it wholeheartedly as though you were doing it for the Lord and not merely for people. | 23Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. |
| 24You know that it is from the Lord that you will receive the inheritance as a reward. It is the Lord Messiah whom you are serving! | 24Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. |
| 25For the person who does what is wrong will be paid back for what he has done without favoritism. | 25But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong you have done. For God has no favorites. |
