Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I don't want you to be ignorant. | 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. |
You know that when you were unbelievers, you were enticed and led astray to worship idols that couldn't even speak. | 2Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. |
For this reason I want you to be aware that no one who is speaking by God's Spirit can say, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. | 3Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. |
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit, | 4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. |
and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. | 5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. |
There are varieties of results, but it is the same God who produces all the results in everyone. | 6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. |
To each person has been given the ability to manifest the Spirit for the common good. | 7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. |
To one has been given a message of wisdom by the Spirit; to another the ability to speak with knowledge according to the same Spirit; | 8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; |
to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit; | 9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; |
to another miraculous results; to another prophecy; to another the ability to distinguish between spirits; to another various kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. | 10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: |
But one and the same Spirit produces all these results and gives what he wants to each person. | 11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. |
For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, form a single body, so it is with the Messiah. | 12For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. |
For by one Spirit all of us—Jews and Greeks, slaves and free—were baptized into one body and were all privileged to drink from one Spirit. | 13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. |
For the body does not consist of only one part, but of many. | 14For the body is not one member, but many. |
If the foot says, "Since I'm not a hand, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it? | 15If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? |
And if the ear says, "Since I'm not an eye, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it? | 16And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? |
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? | 17If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? |
But now God has arranged the parts, every one of them, in the body according to his plan. | 18But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. |
Now if all of it were one part, there wouldn't be a body, would there? | 19And if they were all one member, where were the body? |
So there are many parts, but one body. | 20But now are they many members, yet but one body. |
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you," or the head to the feet, "I don't need you." | 21And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. |
On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are in fact indispensable, | 22Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: |
and the parts of the body that we think are less honorable are treated with special honor, and we make our less attractive parts more attractive. | 23And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. |
However, our attractive parts don't need this. But God has put the body together and has given special honor to the parts that lack it, | 24For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: |
so that there might be no disharmony in the body, but that its parts should have the same concern for each other. | 25That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. |
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is praised, every part rejoices with it. | 26And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. |
Now you are the Messiah's body and individual parts of it. | 27Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. |
God has appointed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then those who perform miracles, those who have gifts of healing, those who help others, administrators, and those who speak various kinds of languages. | 28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. |
Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? | 29Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? |
Not all have the gift of healing, do they? Not all speak in foreign languages, do they? Not all interpret, do they? | 30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? |
Keep on desiring the better gifts. And now I will show you the best way of all. | 31But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. |
