Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I don't want you to be ignorant. | 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. |
You know that when you were unbelievers, you were enticed and led astray to worship idols that couldn't even speak. | 2You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. |
For this reason I want you to be aware that no one who is speaking by God's Spirit can say, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. | 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. |
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit, | 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; |
and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. | 5and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; |
There are varieties of results, but it is the same God who produces all the results in everyone. | 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. |
To each person has been given the ability to manifest the Spirit for the common good. | 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. |
To one has been given a message of wisdom by the Spirit; to another the ability to speak with knowledge according to the same Spirit; | 8For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, |
to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit; | 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, |
to another miraculous results; to another prophecy; to another the ability to distinguish between spirits; to another various kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. | 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. |
But one and the same Spirit produces all these results and gives what he wants to each person. | 11All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. |
For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, form a single body, so it is with the Messiah. | 12For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. |
For by one Spirit all of us—Jews and Greeks, slaves and free—were baptized into one body and were all privileged to drink from one Spirit. | 13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. |
For the body does not consist of only one part, but of many. | 14For the body does not consist of one member but of many. |
If the foot says, "Since I'm not a hand, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it? | 15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. |
And if the ear says, "Since I'm not an eye, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it? | 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. |
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? | 17If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? |
But now God has arranged the parts, every one of them, in the body according to his plan. | 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. |
Now if all of it were one part, there wouldn't be a body, would there? | 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? |
So there are many parts, but one body. | 20As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. |
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you," or the head to the feet, "I don't need you." | 21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” |
On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are in fact indispensable, | 22On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, |
and the parts of the body that we think are less honorable are treated with special honor, and we make our less attractive parts more attractive. | 23and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, |
However, our attractive parts don't need this. But God has put the body together and has given special honor to the parts that lack it, | 24which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, |
so that there might be no disharmony in the body, but that its parts should have the same concern for each other. | 25that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. |
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is praised, every part rejoices with it. | 26If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. |
Now you are the Messiah's body and individual parts of it. | 27Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. |
God has appointed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then those who perform miracles, those who have gifts of healing, those who help others, administrators, and those who speak various kinds of languages. | 28And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. |
Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? | 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? |
Not all have the gift of healing, do they? Not all speak in foreign languages, do they? Not all interpret, do they? | 30Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? |
Keep on desiring the better gifts. And now I will show you the best way of all. | 31But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. |
