and because they had the same trade he stayed with them. They worked together because they were tentmakers by trade. | 3and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers by trade, just as he was. |
Every Sabbath, he would speak in the synagogue, trying to persuade both Jews and Greeks. | 4Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks alike. |
But when Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself entirely to the word as he emphatically assured the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah. | 5And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself fully to the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. |
But when they began to oppose him and insult him, he shook out his clothes in protest and told them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles." | 6But when they opposed and insulted him, he shook out his garments and told them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” |
Then he left that place and went to the home of a man named Titius Justus, who worshipped God and whose house was next door to the synagogue. | 7So Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titus Justus, a worshiper of God. |
Now Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, along with his whole family. Many Corinthians who heard Paul also believed and were baptized. | 8Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his whole household believed in the Lord. And many of the Corinthians who heard the message believed and were baptized. |
One night, the Lord told Paul in a vision, "Stop being afraid to speak out! Don't remain silent! | 9One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent. |
For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you or harm you, because I have many people in this city." | 10For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city.” |
So Paul lived there for a year and a half and continued to teach the word of God among the people there. | 11So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching the word of God among the Corinthians. |

They said, "This man is persuading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the Law." | 13“This man is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law,” they said. |
Paul was about to speak when Gallio admonished the Jewish leaders, "If there were some misdemeanor or crime involved, it would be reasonable to put up with you Jews. | 14But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio told the Jews, “If this matter involved a wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear your complaint. |
But since it is a question about words, names, and your own Law, you will have to take care of that yourselves. I refuse to be a judge in these matters." | 15But since it is a dispute about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things.” |
So he drove them away from the judge's seat. | 16And he drove them away from the judgment seat. |
Then all of them took Sosthenes, the synagogue leader, and began beating him in front of the judge's seat. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this. | 17At this, the crowd seized Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But none of this was of concern to Gallio. |
After staying there for quite a while longer, Paul said goodbye to the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut in Cenchrea, since he was under a vow. | 18Paul remained in Corinth for quite some time before saying goodbye to the brothers. 19When they arrived in Ephesus, he left Priscilla and Aquila there. Then he went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews. | 19When they reached Ephesus, Paul parted ways with Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue there and reasoned with the Jews. |
They asked him to stay longer, but he refused. | 20When they asked him to stay for a while longer, he declined. |
As he told them goodbye, he said, "I will come back to you again if it is God's will." Then he set sail from Ephesus. | 21But as he left, he said, “I will come back to you if God is willing.” And he set sail from Ephesus. |
When he arrived in Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem, greeted the church there, and then returned to Antioch. | 22When Paul had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem. Then he went down to Antioch. |
After spending some time there, he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. | 23After Paul had spent some time in Antioch, he traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. |

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained God's way to him more accurately. | 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him in and explained to him the way of God more accurately. |
When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples there, urging them to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who, through God's grace, had believed. | 27When Apollos resolved to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On his arrival, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. |
He successfully refuted the Jews in public and proved by the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah. | 28For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. |
