For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion. 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. 2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me. 3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Against You--You alone--I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge. 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. 5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within. 6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You. 13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness. 14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. 15O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering. 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart. 17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem. 18Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar. 19Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
