In the eighteenth year of Israel's King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah1Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam the son of Nebat reigned Abijam over Judah.
and reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom. 2Three years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
Abijam walked in all the sins his father before him had committed, and he was not completely devoted to the LORD his God as his ancestor David had been.3And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.
But because of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem.4Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
For David did what was right in the LORD's eyes, and he did not turn aside from anything He had commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
There had been war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of Rehoboam's life.6And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
The rest of the events of Abijam's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings. There was also war between Abijam and Jeroboam.7Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.
Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David. His son Asa became king in his place. 8And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.
In the twentieth year of Israel's King Jeroboam, Asa became king of Judah9And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel reigned Asa over Judah.
and reigned 41 years in Jerusalem. His grandmother's name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom. 10And forty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
Asa did what was right in the LORD's eyes, as his ancestor David had done.11And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father.
He banished the male cult prostitutes from the land and removed all of the idols that his fathers had made.12And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
He also removed his grandmother Maacah from being queen mother because she had made an obscene image of Asherah. Asa chopped down her obscene image and burned it in the Kidron Valley.13And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.
The high places were not taken away; but Asa's heart was completely devoted to the LORD his entire life.14But the high places were not removed: nevertheless Asa's heart was perfect with the LORD all his days.
He brought his father's consecrated gifts and his own consecrated gifts into the LORD's temple: silver, gold, and utensils. 15And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the LORD, silver, and gold, and vessels.
There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.16And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
Israel's King Baasha went to war against Judah. He built Ramah in order to deny anyone access to Judah's King Asa. 17And Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.
So Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the treasuries of the royal palace and put it into the hands of his servants. Then King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion king of Aram who lived in Damascus, saying, "18Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king's house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
There is a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. Look, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Go and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so that he will withdraw from me." 19There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel. He attacked Ijon, Dan, Abel-beth-maacah, all Chinnereth, and the whole land of Naphtali.20So Benhadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of the hosts which he had against the cities of Israel, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abelbethmaachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali.
When Baasha heard about it, he quit building Ramah and stayed in Tirzah.21And it came to pass, when Baasha heard thereof, that he left off building of Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.
Then King Asa gave a command to everyone without exception in Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and the timbers Baasha had built it with. Then King Asa built Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah with them. 22Then king Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted: and they took away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha had builded; and king Asa built with them Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah.
The rest of all the events of Asa's reign, along with all his might, all his accomplishments, and the cities he built, are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings. But in his old age he developed a disease in his feet.23The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.
Then Asa rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of his ancestor David. His son Jehoshaphat became king in his place. 24And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.
Nadab son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Judah's King Asa; he reigned over Israel two years. 25And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years.
Nadab did what was evil in the LORD's sight and followed the example of his father and the sin he had caused Israel to commit. 26And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
Then Baasha son of Ahijah of the house of Issachar conspired against Nadab, and Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon of the Philistines while Nadab and all Israel were besieging Gibbethon. 27And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon.
In the third year of Judah's King Asa, Baasha killed Nadab and reigned in his place. 28Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned in his stead.
When Baasha became king, he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam. He did not leave Jeroboam any survivors but destroyed his family according to the word of the LORD He had spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite.29And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:
This was because Jeroboam had provoked the LORD God of Israel by the sins he had committed and had caused Israel to commit. 30Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger.
The rest of the events of Nadab's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.31Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns. 32And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
In the third year of Judah's King Asa, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel and reigned in Tirzah 24 years. 33In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years.
He did what was evil in the LORD's sight and followed the example of Jeroboam and the sin he had caused Israel to commit. 34And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
