English Standard Version | New International Version |
Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. | 1Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. |
Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. | 2Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. |
For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— | 3For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh-- |
though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: | 4though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: |
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; | 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; |
as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. | 6as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. |
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. | 7But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. |
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ | 8What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ |
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— | 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. |
that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, | 10I want to know Christ--yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, |
that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. | 11and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. |
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. | 12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. |
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, | 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, |
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. | 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. |
Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. | 15All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. |
Only let us hold true to what we have attained. | 16Only let us live up to what we have already attained. |
Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. | 17Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. |
For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. | 18For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. |
Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. | 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. |
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, | 20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, |
who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. | 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. |
