Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. | 1Paul also went to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish wife whose husband was a Greek. |
He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. | 2Timothy was highly regarded by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium. |
Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. | 3Paul wanted this man to go with him, so he took him and had him circumcised because of the Jews who lived in that region, since everyone knew that Timothy's father was a Greek. |
As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. | 4As they went from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for them to obey. |
So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily. | 5So the churches continued to be strengthened in the faith and to increase in numbers every day. |
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. | 6Because they had been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the word in Asia, Paul and Timothy went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia. |
And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. | 7They went as far as Mysia and tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them, |
So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. | 8so they bypassed Mysia and went down to Troas. |
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” | 9During the night Paul had a vision. A man from Macedonia was standing there and pleading with him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" |
And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. | 10As soon as he had seen the vision, we immediately looked for a way to go to Macedonia, because we were convinced that God had called us to tell the people there the good news. |
So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, | 11Sailing from Troas, we went straight to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis, |
and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. | 12and from there to Philippi, an important city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We were in this city for several days. |
And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. | 13On the Sabbath day, we went out the city gate and walked along the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and began talking to the women who had gathered there. |
One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. | 14A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a dealer in purple goods, was listening to us. She was a worshiper of God, and the Lord opened her heart to listen carefully to what was being said by Paul. |
And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. | 15When she and her family were baptized, she urged us, "If you are convinced that I am a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she continued to insist that we do so. |
As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. | 16Once, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of fortune-telling and who had brought her owners a great deal of money by predicting the future. |
She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” | 17She would follow Paul and us and shout, "These men are servants of the Most High God and are proclaiming to you a way of salvation!" |
And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. | 18She kept doing this for many days until Paul became annoyed, turned to her and told the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus the Messiah to come out of her!" And it came out that very moment. |
But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. | 19When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities who met together in the public square. |
And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. | 20They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are stirring up a lot of trouble in our city. They are Jews |
They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.” | 21and are advocating customs that we're not allowed to accept or practice as Romans." |
The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. | 22The crowd joined in the attack against them. Then the magistrates had Paul and Silas stripped of their clothes and ordered them beaten with rods. |
And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. | 23After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in jail and ordered the jailer to keep them under tight security. |
Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. | 24Having received these orders, he put them into the inner cell and fastened their feet in leg irons. |
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, | 25Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. |
and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. | 26Suddenly, there was an earthquake so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken. All the doors immediately flew open, and everyone's chains were unfastened. |
When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. | 27When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped. |
But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” | 28But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Don't hurt yourself, because we are all here!" |
And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. | 29The jailer asked for torches and rushed inside. Trembling as he knelt in front of Paul and Silas, |
Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” | 30he took them outside and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" |
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” | 31They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved." |
And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. | 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and everyone in his home. |
And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. | 33At that hour of the night, he took them and washed their wounds. Then he and his entire family were baptized immediately. |
Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. | 34He brought Paul and Silas upstairs into his house and set food before them. He was thrilled, as was his household, to believe in God. |
But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” | 35When day came, the magistrates sent guards, who commanded, "Release those men." |
And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” | 36The jailer reported these words to Paul, and added, "The magistrates have sent word to release you. So come out now and go in peace." |
But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” | 37But Paul told the guards, "The magistrates have had us beaten publicly without a trial and have thrown us into jail, even though we are Roman citizens. Now are they going to throw us out secretly? Certainly not! Have them come and escort us out." |
The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. | 38The guards reported these words to the magistrates, and they became afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens. |
So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. | 39So the magistrates came, apologized to them, and escorted them out. Then they asked them to leave the city. |
So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed. | 40Leaving the jail, Paul and Silas went to Lydia's house. They saw the brothers, encouraged them, and then left. |
