| 1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins | 1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, |
| 2in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. | 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. |
| 3We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. | 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. |
| 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, | 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, |

| 14For he is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, | 14For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, |
| 15he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create in himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace. | 15by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. | 16He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by which he put the hostility to death. | 16and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. |
