Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins | 1You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins |
in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. | 2that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient. |
We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. | 3Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else. |
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, | 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us |
made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! | 5even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved), |
He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, | 6raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus, |
so that in the coming ages he might display the immeasurable riches of his grace through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus. |
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift-- | 8For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God |
not from works, so that no one can boast. | 9and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting. |
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do. | 10For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. |
So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh--called "the uncircumcised" by those called "the circumcised," which is done in the flesh by human hands. | 11So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands. |
At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. | 12At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God. |
But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. | 13But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. |
For he is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, | 14For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them. |
he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create in himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace. | 15He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace, |
He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by which he put the hostility to death. | 16and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility. |
He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. | 17He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near. |
For through him we both have access in one spirit to the Father. | 18For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit. |
So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God's household, | 19That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, |
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. | 20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone. |
In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. | 21In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. |
In him you are also being built together for God's dwelling in the Spirit. | 22You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell. |
