Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness1And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.2Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."3And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
But Jesus answered him, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone."4And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
So he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.5And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
The devil said to him, "I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
If you, then, will worship me, all will be yours."7If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
And Jesus answered him, "It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only."8And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you,10For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
and they will support you with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."11And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
And Jesus answered him, "It is said: Do not test the Lord your God."12And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
He was teaching in their synagogues, being praised by everyone.15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed,18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
He began by saying to them, "Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled."21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
They were all speaking well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"22And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
Then he said to them, "No doubt you will quote this proverb to me: 'Doctor, heal yourself. What we've heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also.'"23And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
He also said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.24And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them except a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.26But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
And in the prophet Elisha's time, there were many in Israel who had leprosy, and yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged.28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
They got up, drove him out of town, and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff.29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.30But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.31And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
They were astonished at his teaching because his message had authority.32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice,33And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
"Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"34Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
But Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be silent and come out of him!" And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, "What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"36And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
And news about him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.37And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.38And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and began to serve them.39And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him. As he laid his hands on each one of them, he healed them.40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.41And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
When it was day, he went out and made his way to a deserted place. But the crowds were searching for him. They came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
But he said to them, "It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose."43And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.44And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
