Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. | 1One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. |
But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ | 2He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow; |
and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times. | 3 red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times! |
A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away. | 4 Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. ” Then Jesus left them and went away. Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees |
When they crossed to the other side, the disciples forgot to take bread. | 5Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. |
“Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” | 6 “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” |
They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.” | 7At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. |
Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you debating among yourselves about having no bread? | 8Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? |
Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? | 9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? |
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? | 10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? |
How do you not understand that I was not telling you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” | 11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” |
Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. | 12Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Peter’s Declaration about Jesus |
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” | 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” |
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” | 14“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” |
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” | 15Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” |
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” | 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” |
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven. | 17Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. |
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. | 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. |
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” | 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” |
Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ. | 20Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Jesus Predicts His Death |
From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. | 21From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. |
Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!” | 22But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” |
But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” | 23Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” |
Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. | 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. |
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. | 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. |
What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? | 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? |
For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done. | 27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. |
Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” | 28 And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” |
