Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures! |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy | 2Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy, |
and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south. |
Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell. | 4They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live. |
They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress. | 6They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live. | 7He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food. |
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains, | 10They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains, |
because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king. |
He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. | 12So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. | 13They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains. | 14He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron. | 16For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars. |
Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction. | 17They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins. |
They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death. | 18They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. | 19They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. | 20He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing. | 22Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done! |
Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters. | 23Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. |
They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep. | 24They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water. |
For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted the waves of the sea. | 25He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea. |
They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish. | 26They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great. |
They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless. | 27They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. | 28They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent. |
They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired. | 30The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside! |
He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground, | 33He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land, |
and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers. | 34and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants. |
He turns a desert into pools of water and a dry land into flowing springs. | 35As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water. |
He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell. | 36He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live. |
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. | 37They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit. |
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish. | 38He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number. |
When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow, | 39As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering. |
He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. | 40He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road. |
But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks. | 41Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep. |
The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth. | 42When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth. |
Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD. | 43Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love! |
