| 1Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves with the same resolve, because anyone who has suffered in his body is done with sin. | 1Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, |
| 2Consequently, he does not live out his remaining time on earth for human passions, but for the will of God. | 2so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. |
| 3For you have spent enough time in the past carrying out the same desires as the Gentiles: living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry. | 3For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. |
| 4Because of this, they consider it strange of you not to plunge with them into the same flood of reckless indiscretion, and they heap abuse on you. | 4In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; |

| 16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear that name. | 16but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. |
| 17For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? | 17For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? |
| 18And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” | 18AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? |
| 19So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. | 19Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. |
