A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations. | 1A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our refuge in every generation. |
Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. | 2Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God. |
You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.” | 3You return mankind to the dust, saying, "Return, descendants of Adam." |
For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night. | 4For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night. |
You whisk them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning— | 5You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning-- |
in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers. | 6in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up. |
For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath. | 7For we are consumed by Your anger; we are terrified by Your wrath. |
You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence. | 8You have set our unjust ways before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence. |
For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh. | 9For all our days ebb away under Your wrath; we end our years like a sigh. |
The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. | 10Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away. |
Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due. | 11Who understands the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due You. |
So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. |
Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on Your servants. | 13 LORD--how long? Turn and have compassion on Your servants. |
Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. | 14Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days. |
Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil. | 15Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity. |
May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children. | 16Let Your work be seen by Your servants, and Your splendor by their children. |
May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands—yes, establish the work of our hands! | 17Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands-- establish the work of our hands! |
