The Demand for a Sign
(Mark 8:11–13; Luke 12:54–56)

1Then the Pharisees and the Sadducees came, with a captious design, and desired him to show them some miracle in the sky. 2but he answered them, in the evening you foretel fair weather: when the sky is of a bright red. 3and in the morning, a foul day: when the sky is of a dusky red, hypocrites, can ye judge of the appearance of the sky, and yet not discern the signs of these times? 4a wicked degenerate race demand a miracle; but no miracle shall they have beside that of the prophet Jonas, and so leaving them, he went away.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
(Mark 8:14–21; Luke 12:1–3)

5Now at their departure to go to the other side, his disciples had forgot to take bread.

6and Jesus said to them, have a care of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees. 7upon which they said to one another, this comes from our not taking any bread. 8which Jesus perceiving, he said, distrustful men, why do ye trouble your heads about forgetting the bread? 9where's your understanding? don't you remember the five loaves among five thousand and how many baskets ye took away? 10nor the seven loaves among the four thousand, and how many baskets ye carried away? 11why, can't you perceive, that in cautioning you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees, I did not speak of bread? 12then they perceived, he did not caution them against the leaven of bread, but against the Pharisaick and Sadducean doctrine.

Peter’s Confession of Christ
(Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20; John 6:67–71)

13As Jesus was going to the district of Cesarea-Philippi, he asked his disciples, what do people say of me? that I am a common man? 14they replied, some think you are John the Baptist, some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15but what, said he, do you take me to be? 16Simon Peter made answer, thou art Christ the son of the living God. 17to whom Jesus reply'd, blessed art thou Simon, son of Jona: for 'tis not man that hath revealed this unto thee, but my father who is in heaven. 18and I tell thee likewise, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will hereafter build my church: and death shall not prevail against it. 19and I will give you the keys of the gospel-kingdom: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven. 20Then he charged his disciples not to tell any man that he was the Christ.

Christ’s Passion Foretold
(Mark 8:31–33; Luke 9:21–22)

21from that time began Jesus to let his disciples know that he should go to Jerusalem, there suffer many indignities from the senators, chief priests, and scribes, be put to death, and be raised again the third day. 22then Peter taking him aside, began to expostulate with him, saying, God forbid, Sir, this should ever happen to you. 23but he frown'd upon Peter, and said, out of my sight pernicious obstacle to my designs; your views are all worldly, regardless of what is divine.

Take Up Your Cross
(Mark 8:34–38; Luke 9:23–27)

24Then addressing himself to his disciples, if any man, said he, would follow me, let him renounce himself, take up his cross, and so follow me. 25for whosoever will save himself, shall be a looser: and whosoever shall suffer loss for my sake, shall be a gainer. 26what advantage is it to a man to gain the whole world at the price of his life? or what would not a man pay down to preserve his life? 27for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father, with his angels; and then shall be make retribution to every man according to his works.

28I declare unto you, some are here present, who shall not die, till they have seen the son of man enter into his kingdom.
