John 9
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1And passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2And His disciples asked Him saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man of his parents that he should be born blind? 3Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned; but [it was] that the works of God should be made apparent in him. 4It is necessary for us to work the works of the One having sent Me while it is day; night is coming, when no one is able to work. 5While I might be in the world, I am the Light of the world. 6Having said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay (mud) from out of the spittle, and smeared (epechrisen, epi-chrio- chrio is word for anoint, latin-linuit-spread, anoint upon, spread) the clay upon his eyes. 7And He said to him, Go, wash (nipsai) into the pool of Siloam, which translates, Sent (sent away). He went therefore and washed and came [back] seeing. 8The neighbors therefore and those having seen him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is this not he who was sitting and begging? 9Some said, It is he, others were saying, No, but he is like him. He kept saying, I am [he]. 10They said therefore to him, How then were your eyes opened? 11He answered, the man called Jesus made clay and anointed upon (smeared upon) my eyes; and said to me, Go into Siloam and wash. Having gone therefore and having washed, I received sight (looked up). 12And they said to him, Where is He? He says, I do not know.

13They bring him to the Pharisees, who was formerly blind. 14Now it was Sabbath on (in) the day which Jesus had made the clay and opened his eyes. 15The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he had received sight. And he said to them, He placed (epetheken-placed/laid/put upon) clay upon my eyes and I washed and I see. 16Therefore some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God because He does not keep the Sabbath. Others however said, How is a sinful man able to so such signs? And there was a division (schisma) among them. 17They say therefore to the blind [man] again, What do you say concerning Him, because He opened your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

18The Jews therefore did not believe concerning Him that he had been blind and had received sight until when they called the parents of him having received sight. 19And they asked them saying, This is your son of whom you say that he was born blind? How then does he presently see? 20Then his parents answered and said, We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21However how he presently sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know; ask him; he has age (maturity, full-aged); he will speak concerning himself. 22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews already had agreed together that if anyone should confess Him [to be] Christ he should be expelled from the synagogue (excommunicated). 23Because of this his parents said, He has age, ask him.

24They called out therefore the man a second time who had been blind and said to him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner. 25Then he answered, Whether He is a sinner I do not know. One [thing] I do know, that being blind, now I see. 26So they said to him, What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes? 27He answered them, I told you already and you did not listen. Why again do you want to hear? Do you also want to become His disciples? 28And they railed (reviled) at him and said, You are a disciple of that One; we however are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God has spoken to Moses; however this man we do not know from where He is. 30The man answered and said to them, Indeed in this is an amazing (wonderful, marvelous) thing, that you do not know from where He is and yet He opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-revering and does His will, He hears him. 32From out of the age, it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one having been born blind. 33If this man were not from God, He could not do anything. 34They answered and said to him, You were wholly born in sins and you teach us? And they cast him outside.

35Jesus heard that they had cast him outside and having found him He said, You believe unto the Son of Man? 36He answered and said, and Who is He, Lord, so that I might believe unto Him? 37Jesus said to him, And you have seen (heorakas-visioned) Him and the One speaking with you is He. 38And he said, I believe, Lord; and he worshipped Him. 39And Jesus said, Unto judgment I came into this world, so that those not seeing might see; and those seeing might become blind. 40And those from out of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, Are we blind also? 41Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would not have sin; however now you say, We see, your sin remains.
