But stretch out Your hand
This phrase suggests a direct action from God, indicating His sovereign power and authority over creation. In biblical context, God's "hand" often symbolizes His power and intervention (Exodus 3:20, Isaiah 41:10). Theologically, it raises questions about divine permission and the nature of testing, as seen in the broader narrative of Job.

and strike all that he has
The request to "strike" implies a test of Job's faithfulness through loss and suffering. Historically, the concept of divine testing is seen in other biblical figures, such as Abraham (Genesis 22:1-19). Culturally, wealth and possessions were seen as signs of divine favor, so their removal would challenge Job's perceived righteousness.

and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
This phrase reflects the accuser's belief that Job's piety is contingent on his prosperity. The idea of cursing God directly challenges the covenant relationship between God and man. In the Hebrew context, "curse" is a serious offense, often resulting in severe consequences (Leviticus 24:10-16). This accusation sets the stage for the central theme of the book: the nature of true righteousness and faith.

2. Satan

3. God
The Almighty who allows Satan to test Job's faith, demonstrating His sovereignty and the depth of Job's righteousness.

4. Heavenly Court
The setting where the sons of God, including Satan, present themselves before the Lord, initiating the dialogue about Job.

Teaching Points
Understanding Trials
Trials are not always a result of personal sin but can be a test of faith. Job's account reminds us that God may allow challenges to refine and strengthen our character.

Integrity in Adversity
Job's initial response to his trials demonstrates the importance of maintaining integrity and faithfulness to God, even when circumstances are dire.

Sovereignty of God
God's permission for Satan to test Job underscores His ultimate control over all situations. Believers can trust that God has a purpose, even in suffering.

Spiritual Warfare
The dialogue between God and Satan reveals the reality of spiritual warfare. Christians should be aware of the spiritual battles that occur beyond the physical realm.

Faith Beyond Blessings
True faith is not dependent on material blessings. Job's account challenges believers to evaluate whether their faith would remain if all earthly blessings were removed.Verse 11. - But put forth thine hand now; literally, send forth thy hand, as a man does who strikes a blow (comp. Genesis 22:12; Exodus 3:20; Exodus 9:15, etc.). And touch all that he hath; or, smite all that he hath; i.e. ruin him, strip him of his possessions. And he will curse thee to thy face. Professor Lee translates, "If not, he will bless thee to thy face;" the LXX., "Surely he will bless thee to thy face;" Canon Cook, "See if he will not renounce thee openly." But the majority of Hebraists agree with the Authorized Version. Satan suggests that, if Job be stripped of his possessions, he will openly curse God, and renounce his worship. Here he did not so much calumniate, or lie, as show the evil thoughts that were in his own heart. No doubt he believed that Job would act as he said.
