Reviling and Reproaching: Ministers should not Fear

In the Christian ministry, reviling and reproaching are challenges that ministers often face. These terms refer to verbal abuse, criticism, or insults directed at individuals, often with the intent to discredit or harm their reputation. The Bible provides guidance and encouragement for ministers who encounter such opposition, emphasizing that they should not fear but remain steadfast in their mission.

Biblical Context

Reviling and reproaching are not new phenomena; they have been present since biblical times. Jesus Himself warned His disciples about the inevitability of persecution and reviling for His name's sake. In Matthew 5:11-12 , Jesus states, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you."

The Apostle Paul also experienced reviling and reproach throughout his ministry. In 1 Corinthians 4:12-13 , Paul writes, "When we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world." Despite the harsh treatment, Paul remained committed to his calling, demonstrating resilience and faithfulness.

Encouragement for Ministers

Ministers are encouraged to respond to reviling and reproach with grace and perseverance. The Bible provides several key principles for handling such situations:

1. Trust in God's Sovereignty: Ministers are reminded that God is in control and that He uses all circumstances for His purposes. Romans 8:28 assures believers, "And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose."

2. Follow Christ's Example: Jesus is the ultimate example of how to respond to reviling. 1 Peter 2:23 describes His response: "When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly."

3. Rely on the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit empowers ministers to endure hardships and respond with love and patience. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

4. Seek God's Approval: Ministers are called to seek God's approval rather than human approval. In Galatians 1:10 , Paul writes, "Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ."

5. Persevere in the Mission: Despite opposition, ministers are encouraged to persevere in their mission. 2 Timothy 4:5 exhorts, "But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."

Conclusion

While reviling and reproaching are inevitable aspects of ministry, the Bible provides clear guidance and encouragement for ministers to remain faithful and fearless. By trusting in God's sovereignty, following Christ's example, relying on the Holy Spirit, seeking God's approval, and persevering in their mission, ministers can navigate these challenges with confidence and grace.

And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with you, and you do dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
