The ministry of Paul and Barnabas, as recorded in the New Testament, is marked by numerous miracles that served to authenticate their message and demonstrate the power of God working through them. These miracles were instrumental in the spread of the Gospel and the establishment of the early Church.
Healing of the Crippled Man in LystraOne of the notable miracles performed by Paul occurred in Lystra, as recorded in
Acts 14:8-10. Paul, observing a man who had been lame from birth and had never walked, perceived that the man had faith to be healed. Paul commanded him, "Stand up on your feet!" (
Acts 14:10). The man leaped up and began to walk, astonishing the crowd and leading them to mistakenly believe that Paul and Barnabas were gods in human form.
Deliverance from Demonic Oppression in PhilippiIn Philippi, Paul encountered a slave girl possessed by a spirit of divination, which brought her owners much profit through fortune-telling. For several days, she followed Paul and his companions, proclaiming them as servants of the Most High God. Troubled by this, Paul commanded the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ, and it left her immediately (
Acts 16:16-18). This act of deliverance, while freeing the girl, led to Paul and Silas being imprisoned due to the loss of income for her owners.
Miraculous Earthquake and Conversion of the JailerWhile imprisoned in Philippi, Paul and Silas experienced a miraculous event that led to the conversion of the jailer and his household. As they prayed and sang hymns at midnight, a violent earthquake shook the prison, opening the doors and loosening the chains of all the prisoners (
Acts 16:25-26). The jailer, fearing the prisoners had escaped, was about to take his own life, but Paul intervened, assuring him that all were present. This led to the jailer asking, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (
Acts 16:30), and subsequently, he and his entire household believed and were baptized.
Healing of the Sick on the Island of MaltaAfter being shipwrecked on the island of Malta, Paul continued to demonstrate the power of God through healing. The father of Publius, the chief official of the island, was suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul visited him, prayed, laid hands on him, and healed him (
Acts 28:8). Following this miracle, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured, leading to great favor and provision for Paul and his companions.
Raising of Eutychus in TroasIn Troas, during a long discourse by Paul, a young man named Eutychus fell asleep and subsequently fell from a third-story window, being pronounced dead. Paul went down, embraced him, and declared, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him" (
Acts 20:10). Eutychus was brought back to life, and the believers were greatly comforted by this miraculous event.
These miracles, among others, underscore the divine authority and mission of Paul and Barnabas as apostles of Jesus Christ. Through these acts, God confirmed His word and drew many to faith in Christ, establishing the foundation of the Church in diverse regions.
