The miracles performed by the disciples of Jesus, as recorded in the New Testament, serve as a testament to the power and authority granted to them by Christ. These acts of divine intervention were not only signs of the early church's authenticity but also demonstrations of God's continued work through His chosen followers. The disciples, empowered by the Holy Spirit, carried on the mission of Jesus, spreading the Gospel and confirming their message with miraculous signs.
Peter and JohnOne of the most notable miracles performed by the disciples is the healing of the lame man at the temple gate called Beautiful, as recorded in
Acts 3:1-10. Peter, accompanied by John, encounters a man lame from birth. Peter declares, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!" (
Acts 3:6). The man is instantly healed, leaping and praising God, which astonishes the onlookers and provides Peter the opportunity to preach about Jesus.
Peter's MiraclesPeter's ministry is marked by several miraculous events. In
Acts 9:32-35, Peter heals Aeneas, a man bedridden for eight years. Peter says to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed!" (
Acts 9:34). Aeneas is immediately healed, and as a result, many in Lydda and Sharon turn to the Lord.
Another significant miracle is the raising of Tabitha (Dorcas) from the dead in Joppa. In
Acts 9:36-42, Peter is called to the bedside of Tabitha, a beloved disciple known for her good works and acts of charity. After praying, Peter says, "Tabitha, get up!" (
Acts 9:40). She opens her eyes and sits up, leading many in Joppa to believe in the Lord.
Paul's MiraclesThe Apostle Paul, though not one of the original twelve, is a prominent figure in the New Testament whose ministry is accompanied by numerous miracles. In
Acts 14:8-10, Paul heals a man in Lystra who has been lame from birth. Paul, seeing that the man had faith to be healed, commands him to stand up, and the man leaps and walks.
In
Acts 16:16-18, Paul encounters a slave girl possessed by a spirit of divination. Paul commands the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ, and she is immediately freed from the spirit.
Paul's miraculous acts also include the raising of Eutychus, who falls from a window during Paul's lengthy discourse and is presumed dead. In
Acts 20:9-12, Paul goes down, embraces him, and declares him alive, much to the comfort and joy of the gathered believers.
Miracles by Other DisciplesThe New Testament also records miracles performed by other disciples. In
Acts 6:8, Stephen, full of grace and power, performs great wonders and signs among the people. Similarly, Philip the Evangelist, in
Acts 8:6-7, performs miracles in Samaria, casting out unclean spirits and healing the paralyzed and lame, leading to great joy in the city.
The Purpose of MiraclesThe miracles performed by the disciples served multiple purposes. They confirmed the message of the Gospel, demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit, and fulfilled Jesus' promise that His followers would do greater works (
John 14:12). These acts of divine power were instrumental in the spread of Christianity and the establishment of the early church, providing undeniable evidence of God's presence and activity among His people.
