Geographical Location:
Daberath is a town mentioned in the Bible, located on the border of the tribal territories of Issachar and Zebulun. It is situated at the base of Mount Tabor, a significant landmark in the region. The modern identification of Daberath is often associated with the village of Daburiyya in present-day Israel.

Biblical References:
Daberath is referenced in the Old Testament, specifically in the context of the allotment of land to the tribes of Israel. In Joshua 19:12, the town is mentioned as part of the boundary of the tribe of Zebulun: "Then it went from Sarid, westward to Maralah, and reached Dabbesheth, and then to the brook that is before Jokneam." Although Daberath is not explicitly named in this verse, it is understood to be part of the region described.

In Joshua 21:28, Daberath is listed as one of the Levitical cities given to the descendants of Gershon, one of the clans of the Levites: "From the tribe of Issachar they gave Kishion, Daberath." This allocation underscores the town's significance as a Levitical city, serving as a place of refuge and religious instruction.

Historical and Cultural Significance:
Daberath's location at the foot of Mount Tabor places it in a region rich with biblical history. Mount Tabor itself is traditionally associated with the Transfiguration of Jesus, although this event is not directly linked to Daberath. The town's inclusion as a Levitical city highlights its role in the religious life of ancient Israel, providing a home for those who served in the temple and taught the Law.

Archaeological Insights:
While specific archaeological findings directly linked to Daberath are limited, the general area around Mount Tabor has yielded artifacts and remains that provide insight into the ancient cultures that inhabited the region. The identification of Daberath with modern Daburiyya is supported by geographical and historical considerations, although definitive archaeological evidence is still a subject of scholarly research.

Theological Reflections:
Daberath's designation as a Levitical city reflects the importance of the Levites in maintaining the spiritual and religious order of Israel. As a city of refuge and instruction, Daberath would have been a place where the teachings of the Law were preserved and disseminated. This underscores the biblical theme of God's provision for His people, ensuring that His laws and commandments were accessible to all tribes through the ministry of the Levites.

Contemporary Relevance:
For modern readers and believers, Daberath serves as a reminder of the intricate organization of ancient Israelite society and the central role of the Levites in spiritual leadership. The town's historical and biblical significance continues to inspire interest in the geographical and cultural context of the Scriptures, encouraging deeper study and appreciation of the Bible's historical narratives.

Daberath

A Levitical town in the borders of Zebulun and Issachar, Joshua 19:25; 21:28; 1 Chronicles 6:72. Its site is probably that of the modern Deburieh, a small village at the foot of mount Tabor on the northwest.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Pasture, a Levitical town of Issachar (Joshua 19:12; 21:28), near the border of Zebulum. It is the modern small village of Deburich, at the base of Mount Tabor. Tradition has incorrectly made it the scene of the miracle of the cure of the lunatic child (Matthew 17:14).
