The term "presenteth" is an archaic form of the verb "present," which appears in various contexts throughout the Bible. It generally refers to the act of bringing, offering, or showing something before someone, often in a formal or ceremonial manner. In the biblical context, this term is frequently associated with offerings, sacrifices, and the presentation of oneself or others before God.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the concept of presenting offerings and sacrifices is central to the worship practices of the Israelites. The Law of Moses provided detailed instructions on how offerings were to be presented to the Lord. For instance, in Leviticus, the Israelites are instructed on the proper way to present burnt offerings, grain offerings, and peace offerings. The act of presenting these offerings was a way for the people to express their devotion, seek atonement, and maintain a covenant relationship with God.

One notable example is found in Leviticus 1:3 : "If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to present an unblemished male; he must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, that he may be accepted by the LORD." Here, the act of presenting an unblemished offering signifies the worshiper's desire to offer something pure and acceptable to God.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the concept of presenting takes on a more spiritual dimension. Believers are called to present themselves as living sacrifices to God, reflecting a life of holiness and service. Romans 12:1 states, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." This passage emphasizes the idea that the believer's life, actions, and body are to be dedicated to God as an act of worship.

The New Testament also speaks of presenting others before God. In Ephesians 5:27 , Paul writes about Christ's relationship with the Church: "and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless." This imagery highlights the transformative work of Christ in preparing the Church to be presented to Himself in purity and holiness.

Theological Significance

The act of presenting in the biblical sense is deeply rooted in the relationship between God and His people. It signifies acknowledgment of God's sovereignty, a desire for communion with Him, and a commitment to live according to His will. The presentation of offerings in the Old Testament foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who presented Himself as the perfect offering for the sins of humanity.

In the life of a believer, presenting oneself to God involves a continual process of sanctification, where one seeks to live a life that is pleasing to God. This involves not only external actions but also the internal transformation of the heart and mind, aligning one's life with the teachings of Scripture and the example of Christ.

Practical Application

For contemporary Christians, the concept of presenting oneself to God is a call to live a life of intentional devotion and service. It involves daily decisions to honor God in thoughts, words, and deeds, and to offer one's talents, time, and resources for His glory. The believer is encouraged to approach God with a heart of gratitude, seeking to present a life that reflects His love and truth to the world.
