In the context of the Bible, the concept of "permits" can be understood as the allowance or authorization given by God or governing authorities for certain actions or behaviors. This concept is closely related to themes of divine sovereignty, human authority, and the exercise of free will within the boundaries set by God.

Divine Permission

The Bible often illustrates that God permits certain events or actions to occur, even if they are not in alignment with His perfect will, to fulfill His greater purposes. For instance, in the account of Job, God permits Satan to test Job's faith, but with specific limitations: "The LORD said to Satan, 'Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.' Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD" (Job 1:12). This demonstrates that while God allows certain trials, He remains in control and sets boundaries.

Human Authority and Permits

The Bible also addresses the role of human authorities in granting permits or permissions. Romans 13:1-2 states, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage underscores the belief that earthly authorities derive their power from God and that their permissions and regulations should be respected as part of God's order.

Moral and Ethical Permits

Scripture provides guidance on what is morally permissible for believers. The Apostle Paul addresses the issue of Christian liberty and permissible actions in 1 Corinthians 10:23 : "Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible, but not everything is edifying." Here, Paul acknowledges that while believers may have the freedom to engage in certain activities, they must consider whether those actions are beneficial and constructive for themselves and others.

Permits in the Context of Free Will

The Bible presents the concept of free will, where God permits individuals to make choices, even if those choices lead to sin. In Deuteronomy 30:19 , God sets before the Israelites the choice between life and death, blessing and curse, urging them to choose life: "I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. So choose life, so that you and your descendants may live." This highlights the responsibility that comes with the freedom to choose and the consequences of those choices.

Permits and the Great Commission

In the New Testament, Jesus grants His disciples the authority to carry out the Great Commission. In Matthew 28:18-20 , Jesus says, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." This passage illustrates the divine permission and mandate given to believers to spread the Gospel and teach others about Christ.

Conclusion

The concept of permits in the Bible encompasses divine permission, human authority, moral and ethical considerations, the exercise of free will, and the mandate to fulfill God's purposes. Through these various aspects, believers are called to discern and align their actions with God's will, respecting both divine and earthly authorities.
