New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction. | 1A wise son accepts his father's discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. |
Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. | 2From the fruit of a man's mouth he enjoys good, But the desire of the treacherous is violence. |
Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. | 3The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. |
Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. | 4The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat. |
The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace. | 5A righteous man hates falsehood, But a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully. |
Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin. | 6Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, But wickedness subverts the sinner. |
Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor. | 7There is one who pretends to be rich, but has nothing; Another pretends to be poor, but has great wealth. |
The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened. | 8The ransom of a man's life is his wealth, But the poor hears no rebuke. |
The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. | 9The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out. |
Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise. | 10Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel. |
Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. | 11Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases it. |
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. | 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. |
People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed. | 13The one who despises the word will be in debt to it, But the one who fears the commandment will be rewarded. |
The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death. | 14The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn aside from the snares of death. |
A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction. | 15Good understanding produces favor, But the way of the treacherous is hard. |
Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness. | 16Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool displays folly. |
An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing. | 17A wicked messenger falls into adversity, But a faithful envoy brings healing. |
If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored. | 18Poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline, But he who regards reproof will be honored. |
It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them. | 19Desire realized is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to turn away from evil. |
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. | 20He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm. |
Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous. | 21Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity. |
Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly. | 22A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous. |
A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away. | 23Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, But it is swept away by injustice. |
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. | 24He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently. |
The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry. | 25The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the wicked is in need. |
