New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction. | 1A wise son responds to his father's discipline, but a mocker doesn't listen to rebuke. |
Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. | 2From the words of his mouth, a man will enjoy good things, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. |
Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. | 3The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin. |
Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. | 4The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied. |
The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace. | 5The righteous hate lying, but the wicked act disgustingly and disgracefully. |
Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin. | 6Righteousness guards people of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner. |
Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor. | 7One man pretends to be rich but has nothing; another pretends to be poor but has great wealth. |
The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened. | 8Riches are a ransom for a man's life, but a poor man hears no threat. |
The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. | 9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is put out. |
Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise. | 10Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advice. |
Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. | 11Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labor will multiply it. |
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. | 12Delayed hope makes the heart sick, but fulfilled desire is a tree of life. |
People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed. | 13The one who has contempt for instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded. |
The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death. | 14A wise man's instruction is a fountain of life, turning people away from the snares of death. |
A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction. | 15Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous never changes. |
Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness. | 16Every sensible person acts knowledgeably, but a fool displays his stupidity. |
An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing. | 17A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy courier brings healing. |
If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored. | 18Poverty and disgrace come to those who ignore discipline, but the one who accepts correction will be honored. |
It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them. | 19Desire fulfilled is sweet to the taste, but to turn from evil is an abomination to fools. |
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. | 20The one who walks with the wise will become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm. |
Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous. | 21Disaster pursues sinners, but good rewards the righteous. |
Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly. | 22A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. |
A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away. | 23The uncultivated field of the poor yields abundant food, but without justice, it is swept away. |
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. | 24The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently. |
The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry. | 25A righteous man eats until he is satisfied, but the stomach of the wicked is empty. |
