New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
In that day, everyone in the land of Judah will sing this song: Our city is strong! We are surrounded by the walls of God’s salvation. | 1In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: "We have a strong city; He sets up walls and ramparts for security. |
Open the gates to all who are righteous; allow the faithful to enter. | 2"Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter, The one that remains faithful. |
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! | 3"The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You. |
Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal Rock. | 4"Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock. |
He humbles the proud and brings down the arrogant city. He brings it down to the dust. | 5"For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the unassailable city; He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust. |
The poor and oppressed trample it underfoot, and the needy walk all over it. | 6"The foot will trample it, The feet of the afflicted, the steps of the helpless." |
But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them. | 7The way of the righteous is smooth; O Upright One, make the path of the righteous level. |
LORD, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart’s desire is to glorify your name. | 8Indeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O LORD, We have waited for You eagerly; Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls. |
In the night I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek you. For only when you come to judge the earth will people learn what is right. | 9At night my soul longs for You, Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently; For when the earth experiences Your judgments The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. |
Your kindness to the wicked does not make them do good. Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong and take no notice of the LORD’s majesty. | 10Though the wicked is shown favor, He does not learn righteousness; He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness, And does not perceive the majesty of the LORD. |
O LORD, they pay no attention to your upraised fist. Show them your eagerness to defend your people. Then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume your enemies. | 11O LORD, Your hand is lifted up yet they do not see it. They see Your zeal for the people and are put to shame; Indeed, fire will devour Your enemies. |
LORD, you will grant us peace; all we have accomplished is really from you. | 12LORD, You will establish peace for us, Since You have also performed for us all our works. |
O LORD our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship. | 13O LORD our God, other masters besides You have ruled us; But through You alone we confess Your name. |
Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten. | 14The dead will not live, the departed spirits will not rise; Therefore You have punished and destroyed them, And You have wiped out all remembrance of them. |
O LORD, you have made our nation great; yes, you have made us great. You have extended our borders, and we give you the glory! | 15You have increased the nation, O LORD, You have increased the nation, You are glorified; You have extended all the borders of the land. |
LORD, in distress we searched for you. We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline. | 16O LORD, they sought You in distress; They could only whisper a prayer, Your chastening was upon them. |
Just as a pregnant woman writhes and cries out in pain as she gives birth, so were we in your presence, LORD. | 17As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth, She writhes and cries out in her labor pains, Thus were we before You, O LORD. |
We, too, writhe in agony, but nothing comes of our suffering. We have not given salvation to the earth, nor brought life into the world. | 18We were pregnant, we writhed in labor, We gave birth, as it seems, only to wind. We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth, Nor were inhabitants of the world born. |
But those who die in the LORD will live; their bodies will rise again! Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joy! For your life-giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead! Restoration for Israel | 19Your dead will live; Their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits. |
Go home, my people, and lock your doors! Hide yourselves for a little while until the LORD’s anger has passed. | 20Come, my people, enter into your rooms And close your doors behind you; Hide for a little while Until indignation runs its course. |
Look! The LORD is coming from heaven to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will no longer hide those who have been killed. They will be brought out for all to see. | 21For behold, the LORD is about to come out from His place To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; And the earth will reveal her bloodshed And will no longer cover her slain. |
