In that day, everyone in the land of Judah will sing this song: Our city is strong! We are surrounded by the walls of God’s salvation.1In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
Open the gates to all who are righteous; allow the faithful to enter.2Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter—one that remains faithful.
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!3You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.
Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal Rock.4Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal.
He humbles the proud and brings down the arrogant city. He brings it down to the dust.5For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city low. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust.
The poor and oppressed trample it underfoot, and the needy walk all over it.6Feet trample it down—the feet of the oppressed, the steps of the poor.
But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them.7The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path for the upright.
LORD, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.8Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and renown are the desire of our souls.
In the night I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek you. For only when you come to judge the earth will people learn what is right.9My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
Your kindness to the wicked does not make them do good. Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong and take no notice of the LORD’s majesty.10Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD.
O LORD, they pay no attention to your upraised fist. Show them your eagerness to defend your people. Then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume your enemies.11O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will consume them!
LORD, you will grant us peace; all we have accomplished is really from you.12O LORD, You will establish peace for us. For all that we have accomplished, You have done for us.
O LORD our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship.13O LORD our God, other lords besides You have had dominion, but Your name alone do we confess.
Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten.14The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise. Therefore You have punished and destroyed them; You have wiped out all memory of them.
O LORD, you have made our nation great; yes, you have made us great. You have extended our borders, and we give you the glory!15You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for Yourself; You have extended all the borders of the land.
LORD, in distress we searched for you. We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline.16O LORD, they sought You in their distress; when You disciplined them, they poured out a quiet prayer.
Just as a pregnant woman writhes and cries out in pain as she gives birth, so were we in your presence, LORD.17As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We, too, writhe in agony, but nothing comes of our suffering. We have not given salvation to the earth, nor brought life into the world.18We were with child; we writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.
But those who die in the LORD will live; their bodies will rise again! Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joy! For your life-giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead! Restoration for Israel19Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is like the dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.
Go home, my people, and lock your doors! Hide yourselves for a little while until the LORD’s anger has passed.20Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourselves a little while until the wrath has passed.
Look! The LORD is coming from heaven to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will no longer hide those who have been killed. They will be brought out for all to see.21For behold, the LORD is coming out of His dwelling to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth will reveal her bloodshed and will no longer conceal her slain.
