New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. | 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. |
Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. | 2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. | 3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. |
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. | 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. |
For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. | 5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. |
But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. | 6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. |
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. | 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. |
Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice. | 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. |
Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. | 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. | 10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. |
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. | 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. | 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. |
Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. | 13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. |
Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. | 14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. |
Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you. | 15O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. |
You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. | 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. |
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. | 17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. |
Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. | 18Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. | 19Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. |
