| 1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. | 1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, |
| 2As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. | 2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. |
| 3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. | 3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. |
| 4Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” | 4Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. |
| 5But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” | 5While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. |
| 6The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. | 6And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. |
| 7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” | 7And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. |
| 8And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus. | 8And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. |
| 9As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” | 9And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. |
| 10Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes? ” | 10And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? |
| 11Jesus replied, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. | 11And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. |
| 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.” | 12But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. |
| 13Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist. Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy | 13Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. |
| 14At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said, | 14And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, |
| 15“Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. | 15Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. |
| 16So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.” | 16And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. |
| 17Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” | 17Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. |
| 18Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well. | 18And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. |
| 19Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?” | 19Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? |
| 20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible. ” Jesus Again Predicts His Death | 20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. |
| 21 | 21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. |
| 22After they gathered again in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. | 22And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: |
| 23 He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.” And the disciples were filled with grief. Payment of the Temple Tax | 23And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. |
| 24On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?” | 24And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? |
| 25“Yes, he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered? ” | 25He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? |
| 26“They tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free! | 26Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. |
| 27 However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.” | 27Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. |
