| 1The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, | 1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: |
| 2and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. | 2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. |
| 3The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” | 3And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. |
| 4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” | 4Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. |
| 5But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” | 5His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. |
| 6Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. | 6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. |
| 7Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, | 7Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. |
| 8he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. | 8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. |
| 9When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. | 9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, |
| 10“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” | 10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. |
| 11This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. | 11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. |
| 12After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. Jesus Clears the Temple | 12After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days. |
| 13It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. | 13And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, |
| 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. | 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: |
| 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. | 15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; |
| 16Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” | 16And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. |
| 17Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.” | 17And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. |
| 18But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.” | 18Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? |
| 19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” | 19Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. |
| 20“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” | 20Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? |
| 21But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. | 21But he spake of the temple of his body. |
| 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said. Jesus and Nicodemus | 22When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. |
| 23Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. | 23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. |
| 24But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. | 24But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, |
| 25No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. | 25And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. |
