| 1The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, | 1On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. |
| 2and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. | 2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. |
| 3The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” | 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” |
| 4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” | 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” |
| 5But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” | 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” |
| 6Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. | 6Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. |
| 7Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, | 7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. |
| 8he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. | 8And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. |
| 9When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. | 9When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom |
| 10“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” | 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” |
| 11This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. | 11This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. |
| 12After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. Jesus Clears the Temple | 12After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days. |
| 13It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. | 13The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
| 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. | 14In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. |
| 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. | 15And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. |
| 16Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” | 16And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” |
| 17Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.” | 17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” |
| 18But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.” | 18So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” |
| 19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” | 19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” |
| 20“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” | 20The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” |
| 21But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. | 21But he was speaking about the temple of his body. |
| 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said. Jesus and Nicodemus | 22When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. |
| 23Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. | 23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. |
| 24But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. | 24But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people |
| 25No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. | 25and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. |
