New Living Translation | King James Bible |
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. | 1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. |
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. | 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. |
If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. | 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. |
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud | 4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, |
or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. | 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; |
It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. | 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; |
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. | 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. |
Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! | 8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. |
Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! | 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. |
But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. | 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. |
When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. | 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. |
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. | 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. |
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. | 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. |
